Background of the Study
Community support plays a crucial role in the success of educational initiatives, particularly in STEM, where resource-intensive programs often require the backing of local stakeholders. In Damaturu LGA, Yobe State, community involvement is increasingly recognized as a vital component for promoting STEM education in secondary schools. Community support can take many forms, including financial contributions, volunteerism, and the provision of mentorship and practical learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom (Goni, 2023). Local businesses, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders often collaborate with schools to offer workshops, science fairs, and other extracurricular activities that enrich the STEM curriculum. These initiatives not only enhance students’ practical skills but also help to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications. However, the level of community engagement varies widely among schools in Damaturu LGA. Some institutions benefit from robust local partnerships, while others struggle with limited community involvement due to socio-economic challenges and a lack of awareness about the importance of STEM education. In many cases, the absence of strong community support can lead to inadequate funding for essential resources, such as laboratory equipment and technological tools, which are critical for effective STEM instruction (Goni, 2023). Moreover, community attitudes towards education, particularly in STEM fields, can influence the willingness of local stakeholders to invest in these initiatives. Negative perceptions or low prioritization of education in some communities further hinder the development of a supportive environment for STEM learning. This study seeks to evaluate the current state of community support for STEM initiatives in secondary schools in Damaturu LGA and to identify the factors that contribute to or detract from effective community engagement. By analyzing the nature and extent of community involvement, as well as its impact on STEM education outcomes, the research aims to provide recommendations for strengthening local partnerships and enhancing the overall quality of STEM education in the region (Goni, 2023; Musa, 2025).
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Despite the acknowledged importance of community support in advancing STEM education, secondary schools in Damaturu LGA face significant challenges in mobilizing local resources and engagement. Many schools report insufficient community involvement, which results in a lack of financial and material support for STEM programs. This inadequacy hinders the acquisition of modern laboratory equipment, digital resources, and the organization of extracurricular STEM activities that are essential for a comprehensive learning experience. Moreover, the sporadic nature of community support often leads to inconsistencies in the implementation of STEM initiatives. Factors such as limited awareness of the benefits of STEM education and prevailing socio-economic constraints contribute to a low level of community participation (Goni, 2023). Additionally, in some communities, traditional views regarding education do not prioritize investment in technical and scientific subjects, which further diminishes support for STEM programs. This lack of sustained community backing not only affects the availability of resources but also limits opportunities for students to engage with STEM professionals and real-world applications. Consequently, the academic performance and practical skills of students in STEM subjects suffer. This study aims to systematically investigate the extent of community support for STEM initiatives in Damaturu LGA, identify the key barriers to effective engagement, and propose strategies to enhance community involvement. By addressing these issues, the research seeks to create a more robust network of support that can contribute to the overall improvement of STEM education in secondary schools (Goni, 2023; Musa, 2025).
